Regenerati was appointed as the Soil Ambassador for Bulgaria in the ECHO Soil, citizen science project, funded by the Horizon Europe program of the EC.
What is citizen science?
Citizen science involves individuals to collect science data and contribute to real scientific research even without being a scientist.
How can you become a citizen scientist for soil health ?
You can participate in ECHO Soil through Regenerati. It is a great opportunity for everyone to:
- Contribute to real science without being a scientist
- Engage through increased knowledge and interest in soil health
- Empower citizens and invite them to take an active role in data collection and soil science
- Enable citizens to participate directly in decision-making on soil issues based on acquired knowledge
As a citizen scientist, you will receive an ECHO toolkit from us as your ambassador. Each kit is designed to collect one soil sample and contains all the necessary materials for sampling, including containers and clear instructions. You can find all needed information about sampling process and soil health indicators in the Bulgarian version of the Field protocol.
What is soil health, and why is it so important?
The concept of soil health highlights the critical link between soil health and the health of humans, animals, and the environment. Soil health refers to a soil’s ability to sustain plants, animals, and humans while supporting broader ecosystem services, such as water purification, biodiversity, and climate regulation. It is closely linked to concepts like:
Soil quality refers to the soil’s ability to perform specific functions, particularly in agriculture and environmental services, such as water filtration and plant growth.
Soil fertility refers to the soil’s ability to supply essential nutrients for plant growth and support agricultural productivity.
